Claire Best is a shoe maker based in East Brunswick, Melbourne. Her footwear is designed, made and graded entirely by hand. Following a series of consultations and fittings with clients in her workshop, Claire creates shoes that are personally fitted and cater to a wide range of briefs and styles for both men and women. Her designs are often stocked in boutiques around Melbourne. Her emphasis is on quality materials, craftsmanship, contemporary design and innovation to create interesting and beautiful footwear.
Claire obtained her ‘Custom Made Footwear Certificate IV’ at RMIT, Melbourne. Short courses she has completed include ‘Pattern Grading By Hand’ with Gino Volpe, and Brendan Dwyer’s ‘Handmade Shoes’ short course at the CAE, Melbourne. In 2010 she participated in the ‘Five-Day Shoemaking Intensive’ short course, taught by Melissa Needham of Prescott & Mackay, UK.
Claire currently teaches beginners level short courses at the Centre for Adult Education covering basic shoe making techniques. More information can be found on the CAE website.
